For far too long, math has been used to set people apart. No longer! If math doesn't bring more people together more often, then it serves no human good. Learning can be intriguing, joyful, and democratic. Let's make it so!

In my personal experience, Mr. Jackson always presents the necessary material regarding the subject. He won’t waste your time explaining meaningless background information; he always lectures with the intent to help you understand the material. He doesn’t use a textbook to direct his teaching, only referring if need be (which is almost never). An example is when I set an appointment an hour before meeting with him requesting he explain the Piecewise Explicit Formula. I now understand a piecewise function is a function defined by multiple subsections and that a different formula might represent each individual subsection.
Mr. Jackson’s ethics provide direct information to answer any questions that you might find yourself asking him. He’s clear, concise, patient and paces his class so you are still challenged without being overwhelmed by all of the information you are given. He engages students in discussion, questioning them and encouraging students to respond which is fun and promotes faster learning. Such as a time when I questioned how binary code works specifically. Mr. Jackson handed me two bowls, paper, a pen, and a container full of centimeter cubes which I ended up separating several times, followed by writing down inconsistent ones and zeros. Once I had finished separating the cubes, we proceeded to decode the ones and zeros, discovering how many cubes I had originally been given. This task at the age of twelve was a fun and intriguing way to better understand binary.
This is why I highly recommend Mr. Jackson to anyone interested in learning mathematics.
Dave pushes the limit of my current level of mathematical understanding and, without pushing me over the edge, opens up an entirely new way to explore a given concept. It’s beautiful!
I enjoyed the introduction to and exploration of radix. The discussion led around to a better structure of using decimals for solving long division. I look forward to exploring and understanding that better so I can bring it back to my students to enhance their understanding of decimals.
I hope you find something here that helps you to better understand mathematics. However, none of the pages I have listed here seem all that different than any other attempts to write math. For that, I must apologize. What's different about matHUMANtics? Well, it isn't what I write. The difference is an approach to teaching that is uncommon. I invite you to discuss mathematics with me. If you accept, then I will engage you in a conversation unlike any you have had before. Together, we will talk about the humanity of mathematics. We will discuss its history, the real motivations behind its history, and, most importantly, we will discover the knowledge you seek is already within your subconscious. We just need to tease it out with some Socratic method. By joining me in recreating and rediscovering mathematics, you will realize that you too are capable of creating and discovering new mathematics. This conversation cannot be presented on any webpage or in any book. How could it? We haven't had it yet! This is what matHUMANtics offers that is so hard to find: an approach to math that respects who you are and the way you think. And you won't find it anywhere in these pages. You must join me for a conversation. I will be here when you are ready.
Contrary to the title of this blog, I love mathematics. Yet I, too, quickly developed a hatred for what I was required to peddle in public school under the banner of mathematics. Through matHUMANtics, we can help rescue education from the clutches of the blind bureaucracy that is destroying the dreams of too many teachers and their pupils. Our consultants offer both formal courses and personalized video chats to help you deepen your understanding of mathematics without being subjected to fragile expertise or daunting pace of instruction. We need only 10% of the population to rise up against the rising tide of mediocrity in education. Let us be the first to spread the joy of the mathematical perspective. If you are a teacher, parent, or student desperately seeking an uncommon approach to learning and teaching mathematics, then matHUMANtics is for you!
